11 · If your family says it differently · a plain-language guide to Assyrian (Sureth) grammar

A bridge chapter, for anyone whose Assyrian comes from the Iraqi side — Telkepe, Alqosh, Batnaya, Baghdede, Barwar, or any of the Nineveh Plains towns. This guide teaches the Urmi variety, and if you grew up hearing one of those, a lot of what's on these pages will look a half-step off. Almost always it's the same word with a predictable change of sound, not a different word. This chapter gives you the handful of swaps, so you can read the rest of the guide and hear it in your own accent. Speaking value: HIGH if your family is from Iraq; skip it entirely if not.

Nothing here says one town is right. They're all Assyrian, they're all old, and the differences below are the ordinary kind that any language has across a hundred miles.
