11.4 When it isn't a rule
11 · If your family says it differently · a plain-language guide to Assyrian (Sureth) grammar
Sometimes it really is a different word, and no swap will get you there. A few that catch people:
| meaning | this guide | Iraqi side (Alqosh) |
|---|---|---|
| water | miyya | maye |
| hand | ida | also kaffa |
| bread | lakhma | lekhma |
There are a few hundred of these. This guide doesn't try to list them, because we don't have a checked dictionary of any Iraqi town to list them from — and a guessed word is worse than no word. Where you hit one, ask the person you're talking to; they'll know it instantly, and that's a better source than any page.
