9B.11 The one-screen takeaway
9B · Linking sentences — how one thing leads to the next · a plain-language guide to Assyrian (Sureth) grammar
- Chain clauses with no "and". Two verbs that make one action sit side by side, and the object ending goes on the last one: label zabennun "take them and sell them".
- -da / -ze = "too" on any word; on the first word of a sentence, "and as for…". ana-da = "me too".
- ita "then, so", ina "but; look!", khina "(background)": signposts, not grammar.
- When: e-dan…, iman…. A finished event takes the past even for the future: iman tili derri "when I come back".
- Before m-kam, after bar, until hal, often with a la that isn't a "not".
- As akh/dakh, as if akh-t-en, however much kma(t).
- He said / I saw / I know what…: no "that" needed, and a question word stays as it is.
- If: en + present → future; en + past for "if it happens"; -va on both sides for "if it had"; en-la "or else".
- kha for one particular thing that matters; nothing for "the kind of thing".
