4B · Verbs in use — which form when · a plain-language guide to Assyrian (Sureth) grammar

From Khan Ch. 10, "The Syntax of Verbs" (vol. 2, pp. 112–262). Speaking value: HIGH.

This is the other half of Chapter 4. Chapter 4 is about how the forms are built — two stems, two sets of endings, the particles that bolt on. This one is about which of them to reach for, and it is a separate chapter of Khan's, roughly 150 pages of it. Read Chapter 4 first; nothing here introduces a new ending.
Every sentence below is one Khan recorded, from his own texts and conversations, with his translation. That matters more than usual here: "which form when" is a question about how people actually talk, and the answer has to come from people actually talking. Nothing in this chapter is composed.
Grammar words — realis / irrealis, deontic, performative, evidential, diathesis — are explained where they appear, and gathered in "Grammar words in plain English."
