1 · Pronunciation — how to say what you read · a plain-language guide to Assyrian (Sureth) grammar
Distilled from Khan Ch. 1 (Phonology, ~190 pages), kept to pronunciation essentials only. This is a backfill primer: everywhere else in the guide, words are written plainly — ordinary letters, meant to be read as they look. This section tells you the sounds behind those letters, and zeroes in on the handful that don't exist in English. The good news: most Assyrian sounds are ones you already make. There are really only about six things to learn, and one of them — the "heavy" quality — you'll mostly pick up by ear. Speaking value: HIGH for the six oddities and stress; the rest is reassurance.
This section is spelling-and-sound, so it's light on grammar jargon. The one term worth naming: a minimal pair is two words that differ in just one sound (English "bit / bet"), which is how we prove two sounds are really different.
