1.6 Doubled consonants
1 · Pronunciation — how to say what you read · a plain-language guide to Assyrian (Sureth) grammar
When a consonant is written double, you actually hold it longer — a real difference in Assyrian, not just a spelling habit (Italian does the same: nono "ninth" vs. nonno "grandfather"). Linger on the doubled letter:
- shavva "seven" (hold the v), emma "hundred" (hold the m), yavvennukh "I'll give you"
It can distinguish words, so it's worth doing, but even if you under-hold it slightly you'll be understood.
